Vario-X, the first modular automation platform to replace the control booth, has been nominated for Best Automation and Robotics Process at the Advanced Manufacturing Awards presented as part of Metalmadrid-Robomática 2022.
The platform, which enables all automation functions to be implemented on a completely decentralised basis for the first time, without the need for a control booth, forms part of the range of products specifically geared towards industry 4.0 that Murrelektronik is set to present at Metalmadrid on 19 and 20 October next.
Vario X comprises a controller, a power source, switches, security technology and IO modules and, thanks to the perfect integration of the decentralised distributed servo drives, guarantees reliable management of voltage, signals and data directly on the ground. Vario-X is made up of robust modules in casings with IP65 grade protection which easily slot side by side into a robust base plate with integrated machine design profiles. The cabling of the machine's sensors and actuators is via pre-assembled M12 and MQ15 connectors, minimising cabling errors. For instance, the power source can supply the current needed to a large number of electrical servo drives. The line topology saves on approximately 75% of cabling work.
Commissioning overall, i.e. all installation and assembly work, is 40% faster than conventional control both systems. At the core of the system is the Vario-X controller. Equipped with a multi-nucleus CPU, it can be integrated into all superior level industrial Ethernet networks, power the entire system and, since it is an open platform, it can also be integrated hassle free. The controller communicates within the system, as well as with the drive technology and the external participants in real time via EtherCat. W-LAN, 5G and Bluetooth, as well as OPC-UA and MQTT, guarantee seamless IoT communication in the factory of the future.
Vario-X is being tested and adapted in the R&D workshops of some of Europe's most important automotive industry factories, which have embraced this new and revolutionary proposal with great interest.
